We dont just treat pain

We Help You Understand It

Chiropractic care can feel unfamiliar if you’ve never tried it, so we’ve put together answers to the questions people ask most. From how adjustments work to safety, comfort, and what to expect at your first visit, this guide helps you understand how chiropractic treatment supports a healthier, more comfortable you.
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic care is a form of healthcare focussing on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. Particularly those affecting the spine and their broader impact on the nervous system and overall health.
What does a chiropractor do?

A chiropractor helps with issues related to your spine, muscles, and joints. They perform gentle spinal adjustments to relieve pain, improve posture, and support overall mobility, without prescription drugs or surgery.

Is chiropractic care safe?
Yes. Chiropractic care is very safe, and in the UK chiropractors are regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). The GCC is the official statutory regulator for chiropractic in the UK, which means registered chiropractors must meet recognised training standards and safety guidelines. At Midlothian chiropractic our chiropractors strive to go above and beyond the industry standards. We take time to understand your health systems first, then use gentle, controlled techniques tailored to you. Your comfort and safety guide everything we do, and we talk you through each step, so you feel at ease.
Will a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
No. Adjustments are designed to be comfortable, and many people find them relaxing and relieving. You may hear a small click, which is completely normal, and the technique is controlled and precise, not forceful. We explain what we are doing, check in with you, and adapt the approach to what feels best for you. You stay in control the whole time, and we can keep everything gentle as you need.
What conditions do chiropractors treat?
When people think about the conditions a chiropractor treats they often think about lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica and poor posture. This is true we treat these conditions successfully in practice everyday, however chiropractic care can help with so much more than just these conditions. Your spine protects one of those most vital parts of your body, the nervous system. Your spinal cord is the main highway constantly sending trillions of messages from your brain, down your nerves to every part of your body. The spine makes up the central structural frame keeping us up right and also the central point to how the body moves. Chiropractic care focusses on the relation of the spine and keeping it healthy as your spine is such a vital part of our bodys.
Do I need a referral to visit a chiropractor?
Our chiropractors possess extensive training on the spine and the body. Due to this extensive training, chiropractors are primary health practitioners and a referral from your GP is no required. Our chiropractors will perform a comprehensive health and physical assessment and formulate a working diagnosis prior to any treatment taking place. The chiropractor will let you know if chiropractic care is not suitable at this time or if you would be best to see you GP they will let you know.
How many chiropractic sessions will I need?
This varies depending on many factors associated with your issue. Some patients take longer than others to feel better due to their individual needs and the presenting problem. Most patients benefit from a personalised care plan over several weeks. Your chiropractor will recommend what’s best for you based on your needs and health goals.
Will I need exercises?
Often, yes, because the right exercises help support the changes made in clinic and can speed up progress. They are usually simple movements to improve mobility, build strength, or support posture, and they are chosen to fit your daily routine so they are realistic to stick with. Even doing a small amount consistently can make a big difference, and we will show you exactly what to do and why it is helpful, so you feel confident doing them at home.
What’s the popping or cracking sound during adjustments?
The popping or clicking sound is simply a normal joint noise, similar to the sound you might hear when cracking your knuckles. It is typically caused by a quick change in pressure within the joint fluid, which can release a small gas bubble and create a sound. The noise does not mean anything has been pushed out of place, and it is not a measure of whether treatment has worked. Some techniques do not create any sound at all, so it is something you may notice sometimes, and not at other times.
Can children or seniors see a chiropractor?
Yes. Chiropractors can see people at any age because care is always adapted to the individual. The techniques used are chosen based on your health history, comfort, and what you are coming in for, so treatment can be lighter, more gradual, or more supportive depending on what suits you best. The goal is always the same: to help you move more comfortably and function better in everyday life, using an approach that fits your needs and feels appropriate for you.
Are X-rays required for chiropractic care?
For most cases x-rays are not required. Our chiropractors are trained in reading and taking x-rays. If the chiropractor needs a more in-depth look, there is long-term pain that isn’t improving in expected timeframes, or there is a history of trauma the chiropractor will speak to you about x-rays or other forms of diagnostic imaging such as MRI.
Can chiropractic care help with future problems I may encounter?
Yes. Chiropractic care can help you move better, feel more comfortable, and cope with the everyday strains that can build up over time, like desk work, repetitive tasks, lifting, and stress. By improving joint movement and reducing muscle tension, we often help people feel more balanced and supported in their posture and daily activities. We also give practical advice, and where appropriate, simple exercises to help you stay on track between visits. If you feel you would benefit from regular check-ins, we can talk you through our maintenance options, but this is always your choice and based on your goals.
